Energy Management:Your Legal RequirementsEnergy Performance Certicates You must provide an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) when selling or renting commercial premises. The certificate shows the asset rating of the building - i.e. how well the heating, lighting and other services perform within the building. It does not cover machinery or appliances. It also gives you recommendations for improvements, information on investment costs and likely payback time, and the rating you could potentially achieve if you implement all the recommendations. Display Energy Certificates Public authorities are required to display a DEC at all times in public buildings over 1,000 square feet. DECs must be updated every year. If you don’t comply, you can be fined up to 12.5% of the rateable value of the property. Follow the link for more information on energy certificates. Current legislation has been introduced in support of the UK's commitment to the Kyoto Protocol. Ratified by 183 nations (as at Jan 2009), the protocol commits each signatory to putting in place its own action plan.
